The project for the future BSM Ciutadella del Coneixement car park, located at the former Mercat del Peix, is progressing alongside a discovery of great historical value: the remains of a ship dated between the 15th and 16th centuries. The vessel, provisionally named Ciutadella I, was found more than five metres deep and preserves a ten-metre-long fragment with a structure typical of medieval Mediterranean shipbuilding. This discovery is part of a context of high archaeological density linked to the historical evolution of Barcelona's coastline.

An initiative that reinforces commitment to heritage and sustainability

The discovery took place within the framework of the construction of the future BSM Ciutadella del Coneixement car park, the first BSM facility designed from the outset as a hub for mobility services. This space is designed to integrate sustainable, innovative, and multimodal solutions that respond to new urban mobility habits and forms part of a key urban transformation project for the city.

In fact, the construction works for the car park have also enabled the recovery of 40,000 m³ of sand from the Barcelona subsoil, originating from Quaternary sedimentary deposits. This sand, analysed and confirmed to be of good quality, is suitable for coastal use, such as the regeneration of Sant Sebastià beach. This action contributes to the improvement of public space, with a significant reduction in environmental impact thanks to the proximity between the construction site and the beach. So far, 25,000 m³ have already been deposited there, helping to restore an area damaged by storms.

A project that connects the city’s past with its future

With the new BSM Ciutadella del Coneixement car park, BSM promotes a new approach to car parking as an active component of efficient and responsible mobility, while reaffirming its commitment to Barcelona’s history and sustainable development.
